Teaching Mentoring Program

The HSM Teaching Mentoring Program is designed to help young researchers develop solid teaching skills with the support of an experienced professor.

Being a good teacher of mathematics is an important competence for an academic career. Therefore, we support our postdocs in developing and improving their teaching skills under the mentorship of an experienced professor.

Postdocs and their professorial mentors plan a lecture or course together. At least half of the sessions need to be taught by the early career researcher. The professor's role is to serve as a source of feedback and advice throughout the course.

Teaching Mentoring FAQs

All HCM postdocs (with a professor as a mentor).

All postdocs planning to teach a lecture or course for the first time should look for a professor who is willing to serve as a mentor and discuss their plans with her/him. They should also contact their respective institute to agree on which lecture or course can be taught.

The mentor plans the lecture or course together with the mentee and serves as a source of feedback and advice. The mentor should observe the teaching of the mentee at least once - and perferrably more often - observe the first oral examinations, and check the written examination prepared by the mentee.

The application has to be submitted by the postdoc - that is the mentee - using the application form on this page to the committee with a concept for a lecture or course attched to the application. The concept for the lecture or course must be supported by a mentor.

The decisions are made by a committee currently lead by Stefan Hougardy.

The needed formalities will be taken care of by your institute. They will prepare a so-called "Lehrauftrag" and and advise you on any further needed steps.

After completion of your lecture or course, your mentor will write a report and submit it to the head of the committee. Based on this report the committee can issue a certificate of successful participation in the Teaching Mentoring Program.
