We gladly invite you to an HCM event about academic careers. We aim to explore, in an honest and open way, the opportunities and challenges of being a professional mathematician and a professor, and how to get there through today’s job market.

The event consists of two parts: a short talk by one of the programme directors of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and then a panel discussion with four HCM-affiliated professors.

The talk is going to be about research grants. For example: why, and if so, when should I care about grants and how do I get one? We are excited to have Carsten Balleier talking to us about this topic. He has a doctorate in symplectic geometry and is currently the director responsible for roughly half of the DFG programmes in mathematics.

After that, we are very lucky to have a panel of four professors joining the discussion and willing to share their vast experience with us. These are Lillian Pierce (Duke University & HCM), Martin Rumpf (INS), Stefan Schwede (MI), and Laura Vargas Koch (DM). Needless to say, between them they can cover all the ins and outs of a mathematician’s career, and we’re so grateful that they found the time in their busy schedules to have this chat with us!

This event is really about what you want and need to know about academic careers. That’s why we’re asking for your input: we put together this form for you to submit questions for the talk or the panel discussion: https://forms.gle/6yqdNTLjmQLWZe4v7.  We will prepare the event using them and moderate, but we’ll still open the floor for spontaneous contributions.

… and of course there’s a reception afterwards!
