Mathematics in Bonn - Our VisionMathematics in Bonn covers all research fields by international renowned institutes. They share a broad vision of mathematics. At its center is the classical core, i.e. the mathematics of the famous and fertile conjectures, with its surprising new connections and its deep symbiosis with theoretical physics. Beyond this core, mathematics drives, and is driven by, the trend towards quantitative modeling in natural and social sciences. It is permanently assimilating and deepening concepts and thereby rapidly expanding. To enforce the development of themes with promising future, the mathematics institutes of the university – Mathematics Institute (MI), Institute for Applied Mathematics (IAM), Institute for Numerical Simulation (INS), Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics (DM) - and two further cooperating institutions - Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPI) and Institute for Economics and Social Sciences (ECON) - founded the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) as an international cluster of excellence in mathematics funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Within the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics the elite of mathematics unite for research and exchange, the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM) offers special semester programs on mathematics and theoretical economy, and the Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS) provides an attractive research training environment for doctoral students. In this way students and scientists profit from the close connection between high ranked research, application, and teaching of mathematics at Bonn. |
