Quality Management

The quality management in mathematics is related to the 'Evaluation and Accreditation Regulations for Studies and Teaching' (EvAO) of 17 August 2023. The aim is an institutionalized control loop to improve teaching and study conditions. The evaluation project group (EPG) Mathematics was founded as a steering committee.

In order to review and ensure the quality of its four study programs (Bachelor Mathematik, Master Mathematics, Bachelor and Master Teaching Mathematics), the Mathematics Department regularly conducts various evaluations of the courses. Furthermore, examination and study progress data are evaluated. The quality control takes place in mutual exchange between the members of the EPG, the lecturers and the students, especially representatives of the Student Council of Mathematics.


Procedures and operations:

  • The EPG Mathematics decides which surveys are to be conducted. The Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics is responsible for the organization and coordination.
  • The standard includes a survey in all lectures every semester and a course survey every three to four years.
  • Until the winter semester 2022/23 - interrupted during the Corona pandemic - the lecture surveys were paper-based and conducted by the Mathematics Department. As of the summer semester 2023, they were switched to an online procedure according to a resolution of the EPG. The evaluations are produced in collaboration with the Center for Evaluation and Methods (ZEM).
  • The Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics also compiles grade distributions of module examinations as well as graduation statistics and cohort developments. For this purpose, since the establishment of the characteristic data portal, increased use is made of its evaluations and representations.
  • All evaluation results are made available to all members of the EPG. They check whether there is a need for discussion or action.
  • Thanks to the close links between the Audit Office, the Audit Committee and the EPG, information paths are short, which means that improvement measures can be developed in a timely manner and initiated in consultation with the stakeholders.
  • Within a reasonable time after the implementation of measures, these are included in the evaluation, and their effectiveness is reviewed by the EPG.

The evaluation officer reports regularly to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on the work of the EPG Mathematics.

The control loop of quality control should make it possible to react to challenging developments in the future as needed.
