Master Mathematics - Research-Oriented and International

The Master's program in Mathematics at the University of Bonn is a research-oriented program that requires both talent and ambition. It allows students to advance to the forefront of knowledge in a wide range of exciting areas in mathematics. The program is designed for two years and is taught in English.

The program follows a successful completion of an initial undergraduate degree (typically a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics). It can be started in either the winter or summer semester.

If you would like to apply for admission to this program, please read carefully all the information on this page. If you still have questions after reading it, please feel free to email them to us.

All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee. The commission meets shortly after each application deadline. Applicants will then be notified of the decision.

Admission Requirements

For admission to the Master's program in Mathematics, the following criteria must be met:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or a related field,
  • An overall grade of 2.5 or better (according to the German grading system),
  • The acquisition of at least 120 credit points from mathematics modules within the course of this program,
  • Proof of English language proficiency.

For non-EU applicants, the selection committee will assess the program-specific preparation for the Master's program in Mathematics.

The application documents will be used to evaluate the level of mathematical training achieved with the first degree, especially whether the applicants have the necessary knowledge in the areas listed below:

  • Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Basic knowledge of Numerical Mathematics, Probability Theory, and Discrete Mathematics
  • Advanced knowledge in at least one of the six < study areas > of Bonn Mathematics

The benchmark is the level of knowledge reached in the Bachelor's program in Mathematics at the University of Bonn at the end of the 5th semester, as described in the course contents of the Bachelor's program in Mathematics in Bonn.

In some cases, applicants may be invited to a study aptitude assessment.

Application

Applications are submitted exclusively via the online Master's application portal of the University of Bonn. Each application round will be released approximately six weeks before the respective application deadline.

Please note that the application deadlines and modalities depend on where you obtained your first qualifying degree.

Formally, domestic and international applications are distinguished. You are considered:

  • a domestic applicant, if you have obtained your first qualifying degree in Germany.
  • an international applicant, if this is not the case.

According to the examination regulations, for international applicants from non-EU countries we check their eligibility to study in our program.

Every year, there are three application deadlines, with the last one being exclusively open to domestic applicants:

  • January 15th
    • Start of studies in either the summer or the winter semester
    • Application possible from December 1st
  • May 15th
    • Start of studies in the winter semester
    • Application possible from April 1st
  • August 15th (ONLY for domestic applicants)
    • Start of studies in the winter semester
    • Application possible from July 1st
Your chances of admission do NOT depend on the application deadline you choose or the timing of your application within the deadline.

Admission is possible:

  • for the winter semester starting in October,
if you complete your Bachelor's degree by September 30th,
  • for the summer semester starting in April,
if you complete your Bachelor's degree by March 31st.

Please apply in advance, even if your degree has not yet been conferred. In such cases, please upload your current academic transcript.

Before submitting your application, please ensure that your application documents are complete. Incomplete applications and documents submitted via email cannot be processed.

Application Documents

For your application, the following documents are required, to be submitted only as PDF files:

  • For international applicants, all listed documents.
  • For domestic applicants, only those marked with (D).
  • For graduates of the Bonn Bachelor's program in Mathematics, only those marked with (B).

The CV contain at least details of your school education and previous studies. You are welcome to add further academic and other activities.

Please upload scans of your degree diploma and your final certificate (if already available), as well as an up-to-date transcript of records.
(B) For applicants from Bonn, a transcript of records from BASIS is sufficient.

The online application portal for Master's programs asks you to submit documents in German or English only. However, we also accept documents in Dutch, French, Italian or Spanish.

Please write a letter of motivation (in German or English) outlining the reasons for your application to the Bonn Master's program. State your core mathematical area of interest and describe your experience in this field.

(D) Indicate whether you know, or are in contact with, someone in our department.

As proof of your English language proficiency, we accept one of the following documents:

  • German Abitur certificate showing that you have had English classes up to the Abitur (at least B2 level).
  • TOEFL: 550 points in the written test or 79 points in the internet-based test.
To send your TOEFL scores directly to us, please use the institution code 5177.
  • IELTS: A score of 6.0 or higher.
  • Proof of successful completion of other English courses (at least B2 level).
  • Proof that English was the language of instruction in your Bachelor's program.

If English is your native language, no proof is required.

International applicants shall provide the name of a person who can provide a letter of recommendation for you. The provided person will be contacted by us automatically. Therefore, please enter their email address carefully to ensure successful communication.

Your application is not complete until we have received the letter of recommendation.

If available, please send us your Bachelor's thesis or other academic papers you have written. If the work is not in German or English, please include an English summary.

We recommend that applicants with a non-EU bachelor's degree take the GRE test in mathematics before applying to our program.

To send your GRE score directly to us, please use institution code 6301.

Admission and Enrollment

If you have been admitted to the Master's program in Mathematics and wish to accept the admission, please download your admission from the application portal and enroll at the Student Secretary's Office of the University of Bonn.

Generally, the enrollment must be done by the beginning of the lecture period.

If you are completing your Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in Bonn and have applied for the Master's program, please follow these steps:

  • Re-enroll with the university as usual, which means paying the semester fee by the deadline. You will initially be re-enrolled in the Bachelor's program.
  • Keep an eye on the status of your degree. It is considered complete when:
    • BASIS shows your degree, or
    • You have completed all required courses, and your Bachelor's thesis has been confirmed as passed by both evaluators.
  • Once your degree is confirmed as complete, please contact the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics via email to have your admission status updated in the application portal.
  • Download your admission and use it to apply for the subject change at the Student Registry. You will be reassigned to the Master's program.

If at the time of your application, your Bachelor's degree has not yet been awarded, your admission will only be granted online once you provide evidence of your degree.

You do not necessarily need your certificate at this stage; proof can also be in the form of a degree confirmation along with a final academic transcript. After starting the program, you must submit your diploma and certificate by the end of the first semester.

Please download your admission letter from the application portal and use it to initiate your enrollment before the start of the semester in which you begin your studies. When doing so, please follow the deadlines and instructions that you will find on your admission letter.

Once you have started your studies, you must submit your graduation documents (usually certificate and transcript) by the end of the first semester.

After the start of the lecture period, your admission letter alone is no longer sufficient for the Student Secretary's Office. Late enrollment can only be done in exceptional cases and requires approval from the Mathematics Examination Committee.

If you realize that your enrollment cannot be completed before the start of lectures, please contact the Bachelor-Master Office of Mathematics promptly.

If you are not a citizen of an EU member state, you must inquire about the entry requirements for Germany. In most countries outside the EU, you will need to apply for a visa to study in Germany.

You can obtain the necessary information from the German Embassy or a German Consulate in your home country. It's advisable to gather this information either before or alongside your application.

International applicants can participate in a central allocation procedure for dormitory places. You will receive further information about this as soon as you have informed us that you intend to take up the place of study.

(D) Domestic applicants who would like to have a room in a dormitory should apply to the Studierendenwerk of the University of Bonn as early as possible..

At the University of Bonn, there are no tuition fees; students only pay a social contribution per semester. Admission to the Master's program is not typically associated with a scholarship. Only a very limited number of scholarships for female students may be provided by the Bonn International Graduate School.

The University of Bonn has compiled information on various funding options for students. Additionally, students may be eligible for support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The Master Application Portal is currently open for applications.
